Early morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha town and depart for the West Usambara Mountains (approx. 6–7 hours). The drive crosses the Maasai Steppe with sweeping landscapes and distant mountain views.

Arrive in Lushoto for a relaxed hot lunch before continuing to your lodge. After check-in and a short rest, enjoy an afternoon guided walk in Magamba Nature Reserve, exploring misty montane forest habitats.

Target species may include the West Usambara Two-horned Chameleon, Spiny Pygmy Chameleon, tree frogs, and forest geckos. In the evening, return to the lodge for dinner and a discussion on Eastern Arc endemism and forest ecology.

Spend a full day immersed in the cool, moss-covered forests of Magamba (1,650–2,300 m). Morning and afternoon walks focus on cryptic reptiles and amphibians adapted to high-altitude habitats.

Search for leaf-litter specialists, skinks, pygmy chameleons, geckos, and tree frogs, carefully camouflaged among forest undergrowth. The day ends with an evening discussion on species adaptation, microhabitats, and conservation challenges.

After breakfast, take a short but dramatic drive to the Mazumbai Forest Reserve, a university-protected rainforest jewel. Explore pristine trails targeting mid-elevation endemic species, including warty frogs, chorus frogs, and canopy chameleons.

Evening activities include night spotlighting, stream monitoring, and recording nocturnal amphibian calls. Mazumbai’s intact ecosystem offers excellent conditions for observing undisturbed herpetofauna.

Travel across the Usambara divide toward the East Usambaras, descending into lush rainforest landscapes and emerald tea plantations. Enjoy a picnic lunch en route.

Arrive at Amani Nature Reserve, one of Africa’s richest biodiversity hotspots. Afternoon walks reveal exceptional species diversity, followed by post-dinner spotlight walks searching for pygmy chameleons, stream frogs, and nocturnal reptiles.

Spend the full day exploring Amani’s riverine trails and submontane forest. Daytime sightings may include Giant Blade-horned Chameleons, monitor lizards, and colorful forest reptiles.

After dark, spotlight walks reveal dense populations of roosting chameleons, pygmy species, and brilliantly colored amphibians along forest streams.

Enjoy an optional early morning forest walk before breakfast for final species searches. After breakfast and check-out, transfer to Muheza Bus Station for a scheduled public bus to Arusha (approx. 7–8 hours).
