The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most scenic and best-acclimatized route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching the mountain from the remote western side, this route offers unspoiled landscapes, fewer crowds in the early days, and a gradual ascent that significantly improves summit success rates.
This 8-day itinerary is carefully designed with multiple acclimatization hikes, allowing your body to adjust naturally to altitude while enjoying Kilimanjaro’s full range of ecosystems from lush rainforest and open moorlands to alpine desert and glacial summit zones. The trek culminates at Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa, before descending through the green southern slopes.
• Rainforest trekking
• Acclimatization hike
After a final briefing at your hotel, meet your guide and mountain crew before transferring approximately 3–4 hours to Londorossi Gate (2,200 m) on Kilimanjaro’s western side.
Complete park registration and formalities before beginning your trek through dense rainforest, characterized by towering trees, vibrant vegetation, and abundant birdlife. Rain showers are common in this zone, so waterproof gear is highly recommended.
Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,780 m), where your crew will have tents ready and lunch prepared. In the afternoon, enjoy an optional acclimatization hike toward Shira 1 Camp, gaining approximately 300 meters in elevation before returning to Mti Mkubwa Camp for a hot dinner and overnight stay.

• Scenic plateau views
Wake early for breakfast and continue ascending on Mount Kilimanjaro, leaving the dense rainforest behind as the trail transitions into moorland vegetation.
As you approach the Shira Plateau, enjoy your first unobstructed views of Kibo Volcano and the expansive western plains below. The trail is gentle, providing ideal conditions for steady acclimatization.
Arrive at Shira 1 Camp (3,505 m) after 5–6 hours of trekking. Lunch is served upon arrival, followed by time to rest, take photos, or explore the surrounding plateau.

• Acclimatization hike
Today’s trek is a moderate walk across the Shira Plateau, gradually making your way toward Shira 2 Camp (3,900 m).
The open moorland terrain offers breathtaking views of Kibo Glacier, and on clear days, the distant peak of Mount Meru is visible across the plains. Upon arrival at camp, enjoy lunch and a period of rest.
In the afternoon, embark on an optional acclimatization hike toward Lava Tower, gaining approximately 300 meters before returning to Shira 2 Camp for dinner and overnight stay
• High-altitude trekking
• Lava Tower acclimatization
After breakfast at Shira 2 Camp, begin the ascent toward Lava Tower (4,630 m), a key acclimatization point on the route.
This section features several ascents and descents, and you may begin to feel the effects of higher altitude. Lunch is served near Lava Tower, providing valuable time at elevation to help your body adjust.
In the afternoon, descend into the stunning Barranco Valley and arrive at Barranco Camp (3,960 m), nestled beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall, which you will tackle on the following day.

• Acclimatization hike
Depart early from Barranco Camp to avoid crowds and begin ascending the iconic Barranco Wall. While it appears imposing, the climb is manageable and highly rewarding, offering spectacular views of Kibo Peak.
After conquering the wall, continue across undulating alpine desert terrain, navigating a series of smaller ascents and descents, until reaching Karanga Camp, where lunch is served upon arrival.
In the afternoon, take an optional acclimatization hike toward Barafu Camp, gaining approximately 200 meters in elevation before returning to Karanga Camp for dinner and overnight rest.

After breakfast at Karanga Camp, begin the steady ascent to Barafu Camp (4,640 m), your final base before the summit attempt.
Upon arrival, settle in and enjoy lunch followed by a period of rest. In the afternoon, take an optional short acclimatization hike toward Kosovo Camp (4,800 m), then return to Barafu Camp for an early dinner.
The remainder of the day is reserved for rest, hydration, and final preparations for the midnight ascent to the summit.

• Descent to lower altitude
Depart around midnight from Barafu Camp for the summit attempt. The climb is non-technical but physically demanding due to high altitude, steep terrain, and cold temperatures.
Each pair of climbers is accompanied by a dedicated guide to ensure safety, monitor progress, and provide support throughout the ascent. Trek steadily toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa, where you can celebrate and take photos amid breathtaking sunrise views.
After summit celebrations, descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Millennium Camp (3,820 m), where oxygen levels are higher and you can recover from the exertion of the climb.
• Final descent
• Certificate ceremony
• Transfer to Arusha / airport

At the gate, celebrate your achievement, complete park formalities, and receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificates. From Mweka, a transfer will take you back to Arusha or directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport, depending on your onward travel plans.
